What Is a Street Hail Livery (SHL) or Green Taxi?
A Street Hail Livery (SHL), commonly known as a Green Taxi or Outer Borough Taxi, is a licensed for-hire vehicle (FHV) in New York City (NYC). These vehicles can pick up passengers by street hail or dispatch in the outer boroughs of Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. However, SHLs are restricted from picking up passengers in Manhattan below 96th Street (East Side) or West 110th Street (West Side) and at NYC airports. SHL vehicles are easily recognized by their signature apple green color, a requirement set by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission (TLC).
Do You Need Green Taxi Insurance?
Yes, insurance is mandatory for SHL or Green Taxi drivers. Along with TLC plates and registration, you must have specialized SHL or Green Taxi insurance that meets the following TLC minimum liability requirements:
- $100,000 per person,
- $300,000 per accident, and
- $200,000 in personal injury protection (PIP).
Additionally, Green Taxi drivers using a permit owner’s vehicle must comply with NY Worker’s Compensation insurance laws, which require coverage for drivers.
