Electric Vehicle (EV) TLC Insurance Renewal in NYC
Thousands of New York City drivers got electric-only TLC plates in the fall of 2023, so a big wave of EV TLC policies comes up for renewal every November, December and January. If your electric TLC vehicle is up for renewal, we compare multiple TLC carriers, file your FH-1 with the TLC and make sure your plate never goes a day without coverage.
Why so many EV TLC policies renew in November–January
New York City has limited new For-Hire Vehicle (FHV) licenses since 2018. Electric vehicles were the main exception. In 2023 the TLC released EV-only licenses, and when it opened applications through its normal process in October 2023, roughly 9,500 applications were filed before a court order stopped new filings on November 13, 2023.
Most of those drivers bought their first TLC policy in late 2023 or early 2024. TLC liability policies usually run for 12 months, so those same drivers now hit renewal at the same time every year — right around the holidays, when offices are busy and many drivers travel. That is exactly when lapses happen.
- Busy season: carriers and brokers get flooded with EV TLC renewals from November to January.
- Same deadline as your plate: the TLC will not renew your vehicle license without a current FH-1 insurance certificate on file.
- Price changes: renewal offers can come in higher than last year. Comparing before you sign is the easiest way to save.
Our advice: start your EV TLC renewal at least 30–45 days before your policy ends. Request a renewal estimate and we will start shopping carriers for you right away.
EV-restricted TLC license rules that affect your insurance
An EV-only FHV license works like any other TLC vehicle license, with one important difference: it is tied to an electric vehicle. If you replace the car, the new vehicle must also be fully electric. That matters for insurance in three ways:
- Vehicle swaps: if you change cars mid-policy, your insurance has to be updated and a new FH-1 may need to be filed. Tell us before you buy so there is no gap.
- Higher vehicle values: EVs often cost more to repair (batteries, sensors, cameras), which affects the price of physical damage / full coverage.
- Financed or leased EVs: lenders usually require collision and comprehensive. We quote liability and physical damage together so you see one total price.
What affects the price of your EV TLC insurance renewal
Every carrier prices TLC risk a little differently, which is why one quote is never enough. The main factors are:
- Driving record: TLC and DMV points, accidents and tickets in the last 3 years.
- Claims history: at-fault claims on your current TLC policy carry the most weight at renewal.
- Vehicle: make, model, year and value — a newer EV with expensive parts costs more to insure for physical damage.
- Coverage choices: liability only vs. full coverage, and your deductible.
- Base and use: the base you are affiliated with and how the vehicle is driven.
- Payment plan: down payment and installments vary by carrier.
As an independent broker, we put the same driver and vehicle in front of several TLC carriers and show you the options side by side.

Frequently asked questions
When should I renew my EV TLC insurance?
Start 30–45 days before your current policy ends. That leaves time to compare carriers and get your new FH-1 filed with the TLC before the old policy expires.
Is insurance for an electric TLC car more expensive?
It depends on the vehicle and the carrier. Liability pricing is driven mostly by your record and claims; physical damage can cost more on EVs because repairs and parts are expensive. Comparing carriers is the best way to find the lowest total.
Can I switch brokers when my EV TLC policy renews?
Yes. Renewal is the easiest time to switch. Fill out our broker change form and we take care of the paperwork with the carrier.
What happens if my EV TLC insurance lapses?
The TLC requires continuous insurance. If your coverage lapses, your vehicle license can be suspended until a new FH-1 is filed. Do not drive the vehicle for hire without active insurance.
If I replace my EV, do I need new insurance?
You must update the policy to the new vehicle before you drive it for hire, and an EV-restricted plate must stay on an electric vehicle. Call us before you buy so we can line up coverage.
