Track your NYC tax refund.
New York City has three kinds of tax refunds, and each one is tracked in a different place. Pick yours below.
Three types of NYC refunds
| Refund type | Who gets it | Where to track |
|---|---|---|
| NYC personal income tax | NYC residents who overpaid city income tax | New York State refund tool, since NYC tax is filed on your IT-201 |
| NYC property tax | Owners who overpaid, won an assessment appeal, or got an exemption after billing | NYC Department of Finance; credits go to your next bill unless you request a refund |

Frequently asked
How do I check my NYC income tax refund?
New York City income tax is filed on your New York State return, so you check it with New York State’s refund status tool using your SSN and the refund amount on your state return.
Is there a separate NYC refund website?
Not for income tax. NYC Finance handles property tax and city business tax refunds, which have their own process.
Why is my NYC refund smaller than expected?
New York may have adjusted a credit or applied your refund to a debt. You’ll receive a letter explaining it. Our CPA can review it with you in a free consultation.
