What is a tax return?

A tax return is a form you send to the government once a year. It shows how much you earned, how much tax you already paid, and whether you get money back or owe more.

Simple explanation

Think of it like settling a tab

Imagine a restaurant tab. Every week you pay a little toward it without knowing the final bill. At the end of the year, the tax return adds up the real bill. If your weekly payments were more than the bill, you get change back. That change is your refund. If they were less, you pay the rest.

Example

Ali works at a pharmacy on Jamaica Avenue and earned $60,000 in 2026. His job took $5,800 in federal tax out of his checks. His return shows his real federal tax is $5,020.

Tax already paid from paychecks$5,800
Real tax for the year– $5,020
Refund to Ali$780

What goes on it

The parts of a tax return

  1. Income

All the money you earned: wages, 1099 work, interest, rent, and more.

  2. Adjustments & deductions

Amounts the law lets you subtract, like the standard deduction.

  3. Tax

Figured on what’s left, using the tax brackets.

  4. Credits & payments

Credits and taxes already paid are subtracted. The result is your refund or balance due.

Deadline

When is it due?

Your 2026 tax return is due April 15, 2027. In New York you file a federal return (Form 1040) and a state return (usually Form IT-201) at the same time. You can ask for an extension of time to file, but not more time to pay.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is a tax return the same as a refund?

No. The return is the form. The refund is the money you get back if you overpaid.

Do I file with the IRS and New York separately?

They are separate returns, but they are usually prepared and e-filed together.
